Ingredients:
Sandwich
- 4 sandwich buns with a crispy crust sprinkled with semolina, preferably with sesame seeds
- 300 g of a mixture of grated Italian cheeses (2.5 cups), provolone, mozzarella, pecorino romano and fontina
- Basil and arugula for garnish
Meatballs
- 700 g of ground beef from the loin (top sirloin)
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1 cup Italian bread crumbs
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, pressed and crushed
- 1/2 tsp ground red pepper flakes
- 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 cup chopped parsley
- 1/4 tbsp. grated Parmesan or Pecorino Romano cheese
Marinara sauce
- 1 can (800 g) of canned pureed tomatoes
- 1 can (400 g) of canned pureed tomatoes
- 2 tbsp. l. olive oil
- 4 cloves garlic, pressed and crushed
- 1/2 tsp ground red pepper flakes
- A handful of chopped parsley (about 2 tablespoons)
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano
French fries
- 4 medium white-skinned potatoes, cut into 8 long thin slices
- Grill Seasoning Mix
Preparation:
- Preheat oven to 230°C.
- Place the meatball mixture in a large bowl and make a well in the center. Fill the well with the egg, bread crumbs, onion, garlic, red pepper flakes, Worcestershire sauce, parsley, cheese, and a little salt and pepper. Mix the meatball ingredients until combined, but do not overmix. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions, roll each portion into 4 balls, and distribute them evenly on a nonstick baking sheet.
- Place the meatballs in the oven and bake for about 12 minutes. Before removing from the oven, crumble the meatballs to ensure they are cooked through.
- Heat a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the vegetable oil and garlic. When the garlic begins to sizzle, add the herbs and ground pepper. Let the oil steep for half a minute, then stir in the tomatoes and season the sauce with salt and pepper. Bring the sauce to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer while the meatballs are in the oven.
- Mix the meatballs with the sauce and place them in sandwich buns, 4 meatballs per sandwich. Sprinkle with grated cheese and place the sandwiches in the broiler to melt the cheese.
- Top sandwiches with chopped basil and arugula and serve with fries on the side.
